Calendars: so nearly there

Just noticed a slight problem with the calendars feed — while the times shown on the site are correct, the times in the feed are off by one hour as the fact that we’re on BST isn’t being picked up. So iCal etc will be showing events as starting one hour later than they already are.

I’ll try and work up a fix for this tomorrow night, although at the end of October the problem will go away by itself for a few months as the clocks will have gone back :)

Update: yay, fixed it. Everything should work correctly now.

Second update: and as soon as I fix it, a new version of the calendar module gets released. The subscription address has been changed in this, so you’ll need to resubscribe. Sorry…

Calendars are working again

Two fixes to calendars:

  • You can now click on dates in the calendar to see the events for that date. One thing to watch out for is that the event will now show the date it was posted in the header — see the actual event text for the date and time of the event
  • After updating the EventCalendar plugin, calendar subscriptions are working once again, so if you use iCal, Google Calendar or similar, then you can copy the location of the subscribe link into your software and it should all Just Work.

Phew! I think that’s everything now.

Sorry if the site has seemed to be a bit slow lately — apparently three of the four servers at the ISP are randomly freezing, which means the last server gets severely overloaded. Hopefully it’ll be better soon.

Calendar subscriptions are broken

Calendar subscriptions are broken at the moment. Not quite sure what’s wrong, but the calendar didn’t show in my copy of iCal. It also decided to hide all my other calendars, and I had to do the sort of hacking that, quite frankly, you shouldn’t have to do on a Mac in order to get them back again.

Until I’ve found a fix for this, please delete your Western Sussex CAMRA calendar subscription from iCal and look at the site for updates. Sorry about this.

(Does anybody actually use that feature apart from me, anyway?)

Site upgrade — expect the unexpected

I’m upgrading the site from WordPress 1.5 to 2 — some parts will not be working while this takes place (like the events calendar). Should only take about 20 minutes, though.

Edit: …and we’re back. Annoyingly, it doesn’t actually fix the problem I was having with the old version :(

Let me know if you’re having problems with the site.

Edit the second: The link for the calendar subscription has changed. If you’re subscribing to the calendar in iCal or similar, you’ll need to remove the old calendar from iCal and subscribe to the new one. (Annoyingly, clicking on the link just downloads a file — you’ll need to right-click on the link, select “Copy Link”, choose Calendar ? Subscribe in iCal, and paste the link in. It’s still easier than trying to make it work in Outlook, though :)

New feature — calendar subscriptions

You can now subscribe to the events calendar in your calendar program, so the branch socials will automatically appear in your diary (provided you don’t use a paper one, of course — we’re not that good!)

To subscribe, point your calendar program at the calendar subscription link.

iCal users, press Command-Option-S or choose Calendar > Subscribe… — then paste the link into the box and press Subscribe. You’ll be prompted to give your calendar a name, and choose how often you want it to auto-update (please don’t set it to any more frequent than once a day, or my ISP will probably do nasty things to me :)

Google Calendar users should click on the ‘+’ next to Other Calendars, paste the address into the box, and click Add then OK. (You’ll probably want to click on ‘Manage Calendars’ and give it a more useful name afterwards…)

I’m not sure how to do it in Microsoft Outlook — given that it’s not available for the Mac — but as far as I’m aware you can manually download the calendar and import it, but you can’t subscribe. I’ll have a look when I’m at work and see what I can do.

(If you’re interested, the plugin I’m using for this is Garrick Van Buren’s WP-iCal.)

Quick note about the last December social…

The last December social (in Chichester) was originally planned for the 27th, but is now on the 28th, due to the bank-holiday-ness of the 27th (at least for some people). I’ve updated the site calendar accordingly.

This got spotted after the diary was sent to What’s Brewing, so don’t believe everything you read in the papers :)

Gosh, it’s a bit quiet…

Sorry about the lack of content on the front page — I need to tweak the code a bit so that something always gets shown.

In the meantime, Saturday’s Bus Cruise is nearly fully booked, so if you want to go, get in touch with Pete Brown now.
